Frontier Telecommunications Vice President of External Affairs Douglas McAllister gives a presentation to the Bishop City Council regarding upcoming fiber optic cable upgrades in the city.

Frontier Telecommunications Vice President of External Affairs Douglas McAllister gave presentations to the Bishop City Council and the Inyo County Board of Supervisors this week regarding the company’s plan to roll out fibre optic cable upgrades in Bishop as well as in Big Pine and Lone Pine in the near future.

McAllister said the upgrades, which will bring exponentially higher internet speeds at reasonable prices to the area, means that more people will be able to work remotely while living in the Eastern Sierra, which could enhance economic development efforts in the area, leading to higher paying jobs and an increase in quality of life for residents.

Currently internet service providers in the area are using copper wiring to connect customers to the internet, which is slower and less reliable than fiber optic cables.

McAllister said Frontier is planning fiber optic cable rollouts in the markets that it serves throughout the country in what is anticipated to be one of the largest fiber optic cable overhauls taken on by a company in the country.

He said the Bishop rollout, which includes 3,400 Frontier customer locations, will start in July and hopefully will be completed by the end of the year. He said 75% of the fiber optic cable will be installed via “aerial overlash,” basically piggybacking on existing infrastructure, while 25% will be new buried installations.

He said upgrades in Big Pine, which has 750 Frontier customer locations, and Lone Pine, with 850 customer locations, are planned for the first quarter of next year. Of note, Big Pine will see 65% aerial overlash with 35% new buried installation, while 95% of Lone Pine’s rollout will be using  aerial overlash.
